From the quarry to your kitchen.

Large blocks of granite are quarried from deep in the ground or from the side of a mountain. These quarries are located all over the world in countries such as India, Brazil, China, Norway, Saudi Arabia and Finland. We import our stone directly from these countries.

Dynamite and huge diamonds saws are used to cut the blocks from the quarry.

Blocks are transported from the quarry to the factory by truck or rail. Some blocks weigh as much as 5 tons!

At the processing factories, blocks are cut into slabs in this huge diamond saw, much like a giant bread slicer. It can take an entirely day to cut one block.

Here is the block cut into slabs. A block will yield approximately 45 to 50-1-1/4.

Granite Edges

Now that you’ve learned all about the different finishes granite comes in, the next question on everyone’s list is what edge detail would you like? The edge detail of your granite countertop may seem like a simple matter, but it can completely change the look of your space. Really? YES!

Granites come in two different thicknesses- 2 cm or 3 cm (cm stands for centimeters for all of you non-metric ones out there!). The same granite edges can be created from both thicknesses but they will take on different looks (more on that later). Basic finishes like the bull-nose or eased are ones you see most commonly, because they are the simplest and least expensive to make. More difficult edges, such as the ogees or waterfall, are more labor intensive. So when designing a kitchen, we love to do a simple edge on the perimeter stone countertops (like a 1/2 ogee) and a spectacular edge on the island (like a waterfall).

With 2 cm granite countertops, the edges are created by laminating (gluing together) pieces of granites to create the 3cm look. The same edges are available plus some new ones but because granite is never the same throughout, there will be a seam. Sometime that seam is invisible, sometimes it is meant to be seen.

This laminated edge is quite beautiful and created by combing different types of stone to get the striping effect. A great design treatment for an island stone countertop, butler’s pantry, or piece of furniture.

This chiseled edge is simple- the edge of the granite is left unfinished. It is a great look for almost any concept and always draws attention to itself. It shows the natural beauty of a stone as it appears in nature.

These are typical granite countertop edges: Ogee 1, 1/4 Bevel, Half Bullnose and Eased.
